OSINT At Home #9 – Top 4 Free Satellite Imagery Sources
This tutorial is part 9 of the OSINT At Home series. It covers a common question that I get asked a lot, which is where I am getting my satellite imagery from. So I’ve made this tutorial on my four favourite satellite imagery sources and tools – and they’re all free.
This tutorial may suit you if you are keen to learn a little bit more about how and where to find satellite imagery for free. We all know commercial imagery can be expensive, so getting it for free is quite helpful.
If you are keen on learning more about geospatial intelligence (GEOINT), GIS, open source intelligence (OSINT), verification, geolocation or being able to visualise findings in research, journalism or movie making with satellite imagery, then you might find this tutorial helpful.

1. BOTTOM, FAR LEFT BOX --------------------
Global flight path of the ISS with real-time lightning strikes. The flight path of the ISS shows where the ISS is right now, its path 90 minutes ago (yellow line), and 90 minutes ahead (white line). Due to the Station's orbit, it appears to travel from west to east over our planet, and due to Earth's own rotation, the Space Station moves 2200 km to the west on each orbit. If you time it right, you can see the International Space Station on a clear night with your own eyes, just by looking up. Any lightning that strikes the ground will appear on this map in real-time. This is useful for seeing if the ISS will be passing over any lightning storms while on the night side of earth.

3. BOTTOM, CENTER BOX -----------------
The space station's current position over the earth (state/province and country) or the name of the body of water, the current time and date, the elevation and speed of the station, and the condition of the video transmission: Live Now (red box) or Offline (blue box). if the live transmission is offline, archived video or a simulation of where the space station is will appear in the main window. Additional data related to the country below will be displayed in this area - including, capital city, population statistics, age demographics, energy sources etc. Data source: https://ourworldindata.org/
4. BOTTOM, RIGHT BOX -------------------
If the live stream is running and it is daytime, this box will show the secondary camera aboard the ISS. The camera will either be a wide-angle view of earth and space with parts of the space station in the foreground or it will show the astronauts working inside of the space station. At night, the view of earth from the sunny side of the planet captured 46 minutes ago is shown. When the live feed is offline, Solar flares, solar storms, and sunspots can be spotted from the latest time-lapse videos of the surface of our sun. These images are captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and are updated every hour.

Project Kuiper is Amazon’s plan to deliver internet from space using 3,236 small satellites in low Earth orbit. It’s seen as a direct competitor to Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet venture. Starlink already has about 2,000 satellites in orbit, serving about 250,000 total subscribers, but the FCC has approved SpaceX to launch a total of 12,000 satellites. Amazon has yet to launch any, but did sign a multibillion-dollar contract with three rocket companies to send its satellites to space. Watch the video to learn how Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellite internet service will compete with SpaceX’s Starlink, and why the e-commerce giant is in a good position to deliver connectivity throughout the globe in the not too distant future.
Amazon has a plan to deliver internet from space using 3,236 small satellites in low Earth orbit. It’s called Project Kuiper.
In April, the company signed a multibillion-dollar contract — the largest rocket deal in the history of the commercial space industry — for launches of its Kuiper satellites with three different entities: Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance (a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin) and Europe’s Arianespace.
“In many ways, it’s a response and a competition to Elon Musk and SpaceX with its Starlink network,” said CNBC space reporter Michael Sheetz. Amazon first revealed Project Kuiper in 2019, but the company’s announcement last month gave it new momentum.
SpaceX’s Starlink already has about 2,000 satellites in orbit, serving about 250,000 total subscribers. The Federal Communications Commission has approved SpaceX to launch a total of 12,000 satellites.
Amazon hasn’t yet launched a single satellite, but it could still be a big player in the game.
“The satellite communications market is one that’s valued at a few tens of billions of dollars,” said Caleb Henry, a senior analyst at Quilty Analytics. “No one in this industry believes that it’s a one-system-take-all kind of environment. We expect to see at least two and probably more constellations go forward, serving not only the residential consumer, but any type of business or organization that relies on internet connectivity.”
An estimated 37% of the world’s population has still never used the internet, with 96% of those people living in developing countries, according to data from the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations organization. And Amazon joins a list of tech giants, along with Facebook and Google, that have invested in developing digital infrastructure to support their own core services.
“Amazon is known as the everything company, and it’s hard to have an everything company without internet,” said Henry. “Amazon’s fastest-growing segment has been its AWS cloud service. And in support of that, they’ve built out a tremendous amount of internet infrastructure, whether it’s data centers or fiber.”
Henry said space is a “very natural expansion” of Amazon’s data business and its consumer business, “providing goods and electronics and resources to people around the world.”
Watch the video above to learn how Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellite internet service will compete with SpaceX’s Starlink, and why the e-commerce giant is positioned to deliver connectivity throughout the globe in the near future.

For those that don’t want to watch the whole video, below I have broken this tutorial down into chapters:
00:53 – Google Earth Pro (https://www.google.co.uk/earth/download/gep/agree.html)
04:18 - Sentinel Hub (https://apps.sentinel-hub.com/sentinel-playground)
08:11 - Zoom Earth (https://zoom.earth/) NOTE: Zoom Earth has updated imagery availability, use https://satellites.pro/ for clear hi-res satellite imagery instead.
11:08 - World Imagery Wayback (https://livingatlas.arcgis.com/wayback)
The OSINT At Home series is useful for those looking to find digital breadcrumbs and pick up some methods of open source intelligence (OSINT), digital investigations and good old plain research. No matter who you are, or where you are in the world, you can follow these tutorials from home with publicly available information to answer questions such as who, what, where and when.
